Why I Hunt
When I posted my deer on social media I received many questions asking why I hunt. Below are answers to many of your questions. This is not to persuade, but just to inform you all why I enjoy hunting.
First, and foremost I am very passionate about “clean” and “healthy” eating. I am not a huge meat eater, however, when I do eat meat, I like to know where it came from. When I harvest a deer I know the meat is 100% natural. There are no preservatives, hormones, or steroids. The deer has been grazing off the land and has muscle from climbing the steep mountains which makes the deer meat lean (low) in fat. It is also higher in iron because the deer meat has not been processed. It is straight from the source.
Deer jerky is mine, Ellie’s and Kody’s favorite snack. Kody has the best jerky recipe. We dry the deer meat ourselves, bag it and freeze it for the coming year. The jerky is full of healthy natural proteins. We never have to buy jerky from the store because our freezer is full. (I'm totally against eating anything that is bagged with a little packet full of preservatives that says, "DO NOT EAT," yet it is touching the food.)
I also had questions regarding the “score” of my deer and why an animal would be considered a “trophy.” Big deer are big for a reason. They are smart. Mule Deer are some of the smartest species. Usually, the “score” of the deer reflects how hard the hunt was. That is why hunting is competitive. Hunters want to work hard, in hopes of receiving the best outcome. Just like any other sport. If you work hard and practice, you want to win a trophy. Hunting is no different. Hunters put hours into scouting in hopes that they will “win” by harvesting a “trophy.”
The meat and the rack are huge contributors to why hunters hunt, however, the main reason I believe we go out each year is to spend time with our friends and family. It is for me at least. The main reason I hunt is to spend time with my hubby. Life is so busy, and filled with distractions. Time spent face to face is limited. The mountains are mine and Kody's escape from the busy world.
This week spent on the mountain was a highlight of mine and Kody’s marriage. We were able to help push each other to our limits. It was him and I in the wilderness working together to achieve a mutual goal.
Hunting is and always will be a huge part of my families life. It’s a time to harvest clean food, work hard and enjoy quality time with my loved ones.
